I can guarantee at least one of you girls has gone through this
scenario, or at least has a friend who its happened to: you’re dating a
guy and you are both incredibly in love when all of the sudden he pulls
the rug out from under you inexplicably.
This is all part of the phenomenon of guys dumping girls they dig,
according to an article from the Yahoo relationships Web site. Some
reasons the site says that guys kick girls to the curb are bad timing,
they’re not finished playing the field, fixation on the worst-case
scenario, they’re in like not in love and they’re too into you.
What’s perhaps the most frustrating of all is when they’re too into
you. The article interviews Gary, 27, who broke up with his girlfriend
of two years because he was starting to feel emotionally needy. “I
ditched her to save myself!” he said.
Liz, a senior at Pace University and author of the new book Supergirls Speak Out: Inside the Secret Crisis of Overachieving Girls, thinks that some guys dump girls they like out of pure chauvinism and differences between the genders.
“You frequently hear guys saying things like ‘Things just got old,’
but when would you ever hear that from a girl?” Liz said. “Women need
boyfriends much more than guys need girlfriends, so I think that a girl
might hold on to a relationship for much longer for the sake of being
in a relationship.”
A guy might be willing to get out of a relationship that’s no longer
fiery and passionate to play the field, Liz said. “He’s not worried
about when he’ll get another girlfriend, probably because he doesn’t
need a girlfriend to feel good about himself.”
Ashley, 25, a young professional in the D.C. area, said it comes
down to self-respect. “Do you want to stay in a relationship with a
guy who’s got one foot out the door? Or do you want to dump that guy
and go find a man who actually wants to be with you?” she said.
As far as a guy’s point of view, Andrew, 24, feels like the article holds a lot of truths.
“A lot of the time we think we only have one life to live, so we
need to squeeze as much out of our dating experiences before we finally
‘throw in the towel,’” Andrew said.
“There are so many different people and types of people, and therefore so many different experiences.”
According to Andrew, boys are tempted to try all the different types of
girls out there. “Eventually maturity has to smack us in the face and
help us realize a great thing when it comes our way---and that we
shouldn’t take it for granted,” he said.
5 reasons guys dump girls they’re into
1. Bad timing – I had a relationship the last semester of my senior year of college. Talk about bad timing.
2. The Casanova Syndrome – He’s male, he wants as many partners as possible.
3. Fear You’ll Become Their Mothers – Start nagging him about
leaving dirty dishes in the sink and wet towels on the floor, they’ll
have visions of their mom scolding them, circa age 12.
4. Not in Love With You – You have fun together and you both really like each other, but it’s just not getting past love.
5. Too Much in Love With You – They protect their emotions and
vulnerability, so rather than becoming needy, they break off the
relationship faster than you can say “I do.”
